Wandering Through Nature: My Favorite Countryside Walks Near Bristol
18 June 2026
Join me as I explore the serene trails and hidden gems just outside the bustling city of Bristol. From breathtaking views to charming villages, these walks are the perfect escape into nature!
As someone who lives in the vibrant city of Bristol, I often find myself craving the tranquillity of the countryside. Luckily, I’ve discovered a few enchanting walks just a stone's throw away from the urban hustle. The best part? Each one offers a unique experience, breathtaking views, and a chance to just breathe in the fresh country air.
One of my absolute favorite spots is the Tyntesfield Estate, located just about seven miles from the city center. The striking Victorian Gothic mansion surrounded by lush gardens is an absolute must-see. I always take my time wandering through the grounds, where the flowers are bursting with color during the spring. Make sure to bring your camera; every angle is Instagram-worthy!
The walk around the estate is delightful, weaving through ancient trees and manicured lawns. There's something incredibly soothing about the sound of leaves rustling in the breeze and birds chirping overhead. If you visit during the week, the crowds are smaller, giving you an even more intimate experience with nature.
Then, there's the stunning Cheddar Gorge, a bit further afield but well worth the drive! It’s about 20 miles from Bristol, but trust me, the views are breathtaking. I often hike along the cliff-top paths to take in the soaring limestone cliffs. The sense of achievement after reaching the top is unbeatable—plus, the vistas of the gorge are simply spectacular.
One tip: if you’re feeling adventurous, consider taking the circular walk that includes some sections of the gorge that are less traveled. There are some hidden paths leading through wildflower meadows that feel utterly magical in the warmer months.
Another gem I’ve stumbled upon is the Ashton Court Estate, just a short drive out of Bristol. It's perfect for a lazy Sunday stroll—think sprawling parkland, deer roaming freely, and that lovely, welcoming vibe I adore. The estate has several walking trails, but my favorite is the one that takes you through the woods and opens up to some beautiful scenes of the city skyline against the backdrop of the green hills.
What I love about Ashton Court is how accessible it is, yet you can easily lose yourself in nature. I’ve often packed a picnic to enjoy on one of the grassy knolls, soaking in the quietness while sipping my favorite brew. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a few vintage cars, as the estate hosts events throughout the year.
If you have a bit more time, I highly recommend venturing to the village of Wotton-under-Edge. The countryside walk there is a hidden treasure. It winds through rolling hills, takes you past quaint cottages, and you may find yourself in the center of a classic English village. Don't skip the local tea shops! Grab a slice of homemade cake to enjoy on your walk — it’s the perfect reward after a trek!
And speaking of rewards, a visit to the Cotswolds is an absolute treat. I often find myself wandering through places like Bibury or Bourton-on-the-Water. The Cotswolds’ honey-colored stone cottages, rivers, and fields bursting with wildflowers never fail to make my heart sing. Try to time your visit for early morning or late afternoon; the sunlight is simply magical.
In all honesty, these countryside walks near Bristol have not only been a chance to escape but also to reconnect with myself and find peace amid nature’s beauty. Each path I’ve explored has a story to tell, and I can’t wait to see where my next adventure leads. So grab your walking shoes, and maybe a friend, and set off on your own countryside journey—you won’t regret it!
