Finding My Zen: Why I Keep Returning to the Countryside Around Bristol

There is a special kind of magic in leaving the bustling streets of Bristol for a quiet ramble through the Mendip Hills or the Cotswolds. Here are my favorite local escapes to help you recharge your batteries.

Living in Bristol is brilliant. I love the energy of Stokes Croft, the street art, and the independent cafes. But sometimes, the city noise just gets a bit too much, and I find myself craving the smell of damp earth and the sound of silence. Luckily, some of the most stunning countryside in the UK is right on our doorstep. Whenever I feel the need to reset, I grab my boots and head for the hills. One of my absolute favorite spots is Tyntesfield. It is just a quick hop from the city, but it feels like a different world entirely. I love wandering through the woodland trails there; it is perfect for when you want a substantial walk without feeling like you are embarking on a major expedition. The estate is sprawling enough that even on a busy weekend, you can find a quiet path to call your own. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous, I cannot recommend the Mendip Hills enough. Specifically, heading toward Black Down. It is a bit of a climb, I will be honest, but the view from the top is worth every bit of the effort. On a clear day, you can look out over the Somerset levels, and it honestly makes me feel so small in the best way possible. It is the kind of view that helps put all my daily worries into perspective. When I am out there, I often pack a little flask of coffee and a sandwich. There is nothing quite like sitting on a weathered stone wall, listening to the wind and watching the sheep graze, just taking a moment to breathe. For those days when I want something a bit flatter but just as beautiful, the Avon Valley towards Bath is my go-to. Walking the river path is incredibly peaceful. It is lovely watching the narrowboats drift by, and there is always something soothing about following the flow of the water. My top tip? Check the weather before you go, because Somerset mud is no joke. I learned that the hard way during my first autumn here, ending up with boots that looked like they had been dragged through a swamp. Invest in a decent pair of waterproof walking shoes; your future self will thank you. Another little local tip: keep an eye out for the small, family-run cafes tucked away in the villages near your walk. There is usually one waiting with a slice of cake or a proper pot of tea just when you need it most. These walks have become my weekly therapy. They have taught me that you don't always need a long-haul flight to find beauty or peace. Sometimes, it is just about taking a short bus ride or a quick drive, lacing up your boots, and remembering how good it feels to just walk without a destination in mind. So, the next time you feel that city burnout creeping in, do yourself a favor. Leave the laptop at home, turn off your phone notifications, and get out into the green. Trust me, you will come back to Bristol feeling like a whole new person.
