Finding My Zen: The Best Countryside Escapes Just a Stone’s Throw From Bristol

Tired of the city bustle? Join me as I wander through my favorite hidden countryside trails just a short drive from Bristol’s vibrant streets.

There are days when the constant hum of Gloucester Road or the frantic energy of the Harbourside starts to feel a bit too much. For me, that’s when I know it’s time to lace up my mud-caked hiking boots and head for the hills. Living in Bristol is brilliant, but honestly, the real magic happens when you escape the city limits. Luckily, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to rolling hills and quiet woodlands. My absolute go-to for a Sunday reset is the Ashton Court Estate. I know, it’s a bit of a local cliché, but there is a reason for that. If you venture past the main mansion and head deep into the woodland trails, you’ll find sections where you genuinely can’t hear a single car. I love sitting near the deer park at golden hour, watching the light filter through the ancient oak trees. It’s my personal sanctuary. If I’m looking for something that feels a bit more 'wild,' I usually drive twenty minutes out to the Mendip Hills. The walk up to Black Down is a bit of a leg-burner, I’ll admit, but the view from the trig point is worth every drop of sweat. On a clear day, you can see right across the Bristol Channel toward Wales. My top tip? Pack a proper flask of coffee and a thick woolly jumper. Even in the height of summer, the wind up there has a way of reminding you who’s boss. Then there’s the Chew Valley. If you want a walk that ends with a really good slice of cake or a pint of local cider, this is your spot. Walking the perimeter of Chew Valley Lake is perfect for clearing your head. It’s relatively flat, which is great for those days when you’ve had a busy week and your legs just want to take it easy. I always make sure to stop by a local farm shop on the way back home for some local cheese. There is something deeply satisfying about pairing a long walk with a bit of local produce. I’ve realized that I don’t need to go on a massive expedition to feel refreshed. Sometimes, just grabbing my backpack and hitting the lanes around Pensford or Blagdon is enough to reset my brain. It’s about the fresh air, the smell of damp earth, and the quiet rhythm of your own boots hitting the trail. If you are a Bristol local looking to reconnect with nature, don't overthink it. Just pick a direction, drive until the city noise fades, and let the countryside take over. Do you have a secret trail you swear by? I’m always looking for new routes, so please share your favorites next time you see me out and about!
