Beyond the Roman Baths: Hidden Gems of Bath
21 June 2026
Bath is much more than its iconic Roman Baths. Join me as I uncover the city's hidden gems and share personal tips for a unique experience!
When I first visited Bath, it was all about the Roman Baths. Standing in that incredible, ancient space, it felt like stepping back in time. However, on my most recent trip, I decided to dig a little deeper and discover what else this beautiful city has to offer. Trust me when I say that Bath's charm extends far beyond the historic baths.
After soaking in the history of the Roman Baths, I needed a coffee—a crucial next step for any traveler. I stumbled upon a cozy little café called Colonna & Smalls on Norfolk Street. The atmosphere was welcoming, filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Their baristas are like artists, crafting the perfect latte with a hint of love. I remember sitting by the window with my cup, watching the world go by, and realizing this was the perfect way to recharge.
From coffee, I ventured to the picturesque streets of Bath. If you're up for a bit of walking, don't skip the scenic Royal Crescent. As I stood there, gazing at the sweeping Georgian architecture, the soft curves of the buildings against the green expanse of Royal Victoria Park filled me with such joy. It’s a perfect spot for a picnic, so I recommend bringing some snacks or stopping by a local deli. The views are absolutely worth it!
One of my favorite surprises occurred at the Jane Austen Centre. Admittedly, I wasn't expecting to be so captivated by a small museum dedicated to an author, but Austen’s connection to Bath is so rich and textured. I took part in a delightful guided tour, which really brought her world to life. The costumed staff and the engaging displays made me feel like I was walking alongside Mister Darcy himself! Don't forget to visit the gift shop for some fun Austen-themed souvenirs.
As I wandered through the quaint streets, I found myself in the Artisan Quarter—a haven for creatives. The vibrancy of this area is infectious! I explored unique shops, from pottery studios to delightful bookstores filled with tales waiting to be discovered. If you're a fan of one-of-a-kind finds, I cannot recommend The Good Pay enough. Their handmade goods range from beautiful ceramics to locally crafted jewelry, and I dare you to leave without a little treasure!
For lunch, I sought something traditional and delicious. That's when I found some of the best fish and chips at The Plaice to Be. It's a small establishment, but trust me, the food packs a punch! The crispy batter and the fluffy chips were divine. Pair that with a pint of local ale, and you’ve got yourself a classic Bath experience.
After lunch, I took a leisurely stroll along the Kennet and Avon Canal. You wouldn't believe how serene that spot is! The gentle lapping of water and the sight of narrowboats gliding by created a peaceful moment in the middle of my bustling day. I highly suggest taking a moment to pause here—maybe even bring a book to soak in the beauty.
To wrap up my day, I visited the Bath Spa. While the Roman Baths are a must-see, there's something wonderfully indulgent about the modern thermal spas here. The Rooftop Pool offers panoramic views of the city, and as I floated in the warm waters, I felt all my worries melt away. If you’re considering a trip, make sure to book in advance—it’s worth every penny!
From the vibrant coffee culture to the thrilling history and hidden artistic corners, Bath is a treasure trove just waiting to be explored. The next time you find yourself in this enchanting city, step off the beaten path and embrace all the hidden gems that make it so special. You won’t regret it!
