Caffeine and Sea Salt: My Absolute Favorite Coffee Spots in Brighton

Forget the big chains; Brighton’s coffee scene is where the real magic happens. I’m spilling the beans on the independent gems that fuel my weekend seaside wanderings.

There is something about the salt-tinged air in Brighton that makes a really good cup of coffee taste even better. Whenever I have a spare morning, you will find me wandering the Lanes, usually with a mission to find the perfect brew. Brighton is teeming with incredible independent coffee shops, and over the years, I have narrowed down my list to the ones that truly feel like home. If you are looking for a caffeine fix that comes with a side of local character, here is where you need to go. First up is Pelicano Coffee Co on Sydney Street. It is a total staple in the North Laine. I have spent countless rainy afternoons curled up in the back of their shop with a pour-over that is always brewed to perfection. The atmosphere is cozy, the staff know their beans inside out, and their sourdough toast is the ideal accompaniment to a morning flat white. If you manage to get a table in their garden space, you are essentially winning at life. Then there is Black Mocha. Located just a short stroll from the beach on Gloucester Road, this place feels like a warm hug. It is popular for a reason, so it can get busy, but the wait is worth it for their incredible hot chocolate and the rich, complex espresso they serve. I love sitting near the window and just people-watching as the quirky Brighton crowds drift by. For the serious coffee nerds, you cannot miss Workshop at 19 Grams. These guys are serious about their craft. Every time I walk in, I feel like I am getting a masterclass in roasting. It is clean, minimalist, and focuses entirely on the quality of the cup. It is the perfect spot if you want to escape the hustle of the city center and enjoy a coffee that is genuinely world-class. If you find yourself gravitating toward the seafront, keep an eye out for The Flour Pot Bakery. While they are famous for their pastries—and rightly so, because that almond croissant will change your life—their coffee is consistently excellent. Grabbing a takeaway cup from them and heading down to the pebbled beach to sit by the waves is my absolute favorite way to start a Saturday. It is these little moments that make living near or visiting Brighton so special. Every one of these shops has a different personality, but they all share a passion for good beans and a friendly, unpretentious vibe. When you visit, do not just rush for the first neon sign you see. Take your time, pop into these local spots, and talk to the baristas. They are the ones who give Brighton its soul. So, next time you are in town and in need of a pick-me-up, skip the high street chains. Support the local independent scene, grab a delicious brew, and enjoy the beautiful, eclectic madness that is Brighton. Just make sure to tell them a fellow coffee lover sent you.
